The End of My Dance Mom Era

Today is a special day.  My daughter Avery will take the stage for the final time tonight for her last dance recital.

For the past 15 years, dance has been a big part of Avery’s life.  And mine.  I have had the pleasure of being a dance mom.  I’ve worked hard to make sure the makeup is flawless, and I’ve perfected the bun (quite a challenge given that Avery has thick, curly hair!)  More importantly, I have watched my daughter change and grow from this amazing experience.  She has learned so much about the importance of teamwork and personal discipline.  She has made wonderful friendships.  And her dance technique has come so far – she is a joy to watch on stage.  It has been a true blessing to support my daughter as she does what she loves.

One of the things I am most proud of is how Avery has really come into her own young adulthood throughout this time.  She knows what she likes and what she doesn’t.  She fell in love with tap and decided to pursue that specialty over others, despite it not always being the most popular style.  She has become a strong peer leader as well.  She encourages her teammates and exemplifies the saying, ‘there is no I in team.’  When there were disappointments, she acknowledged them, sought out the lesson to be learned, and moved on.  She refuses to get sucked into drama; she will walk away instead.

Yes, dance is expensive.  Yes, it takes up a lot of time.  But I can honestly say it has all been worth it.  And it is because of her growth, her confidence, and her discipline that I am comfortable with her moving across the country in a few months for college.  I have no doubt she is going to thrive.

So it’s the official end of my dance mom era.  A lot of emotions swirling around today, but mostly happy and grateful.  I am excited to watch my girl perform for the last time.

Wishing everyone a wonderful, relaxing Memorial Day weekend.  Take time for yourself and do what makes you happy.  Preserve your peace.
