It’s been a week and a half since I boarded a plane out of Las Vegas heading for home. I applaud those who had their post-conference blog posts knocked out within hours of the final session. For me, I need a bit more time to process. I’ve done that and I’ve created a post-conference to do list:
1. Acknowledge and Be Grateful – I am in awe of what took place in Las Vegas. It was amazing to be in a place as large and fast-moving as Vegas and see thousands of fellow HR pros living it up. Whether eating at a fabulous restaurant, relaxing by the pool, or hitting the beer pong arcade (yes, it’s a real thing!) it was refreshing to see people living life and enjoying themselves. We know the impact the pandemic has had on our profession, and I know everyone needs a break. I’m so glad that so many were able to participate. I am grateful to have had the opportunity.
2. Remember Why You Went and Take Action – What were your reason(s) for attending SHRM21? Good old professional development? Were you seeking information on a specific topic or product? Do you have a particular goal you’re trying to achieve? Is there something going on in your organization that you are seeking help with? You’re like me and just love being surrounded by fellow HR geeks? Whatever your reason – remember it and take action. Follow up with that speaker who spoke to you, reach out to that vendor you connected with, go through the stack of business cards you collected and send emails. It’s very easy to attend a conference and leave it all behind when you get home. I challenge you to keep it going.
3. Consider Your Next Move – We are quickly approaching the 4th quarter of 2021. For many HR Pros, there are heavy-duty year end checklists being pulled out in preparation. You may be embarking on the most wonderful time of the year – benefits open enrollment! There’s a lot going on. But I encourage you to consider your next move. What will be your goals for 2022? Are you where you want to be in your career? Are you with the right organization? Do you want to take the leap into volunteering in our industry? Maybe it’s time to find a mentor or become a mentor. Take the time to focus on you. I know it’s very hard for HR Pros to engage in self-care – we collectively tend to be a nurturing people who naturally gravitate toward serving others. But please take some time to take care of yourself and spend a little time thinking about your future.
Finally, I want to say what an amazing, awe-inspiring experience it was to speak at SHRM21. It was the highlight of my entire year. To have the opportunity to talk with other HR professionals who work in small business for an hour on a Sunday morning…and then to connect afterwards…phenomenal. I feel truly blessed to have been asked to participate as a speaker. And I am deeply grateful to everyone who attended and who have reached out since. The power of connection in our industry is awesome. We need each other, now more than ever.
